100 meters and 4x100 meters relay

About 3 months ago,in the Summer Beijing Olympic Games, Usain Bolt won the 100 meters men event with record-breaking 9.69 seconds. A few days later, Usain Bolt and his team mates Nesta Carter, Michael Frater and Asafa Powell broke  world and Olympic record with 37.10 seconds.

But there is one interesting fact, that is if you divide the 4x100 meters record 37.10 seconds by four you will get 9.275 seconds. This means each of them ran only 9.275 seconds for 100 meters which is much faster compare to Usain Bolt's 100 meters record (9.69 seconds).
The reason is it take certain time for a sprinter to reach his/her full speed from the starting point.
In the 4x100 meters relay event, the athletes already run for a certain distance before he/her receive the baton and continue to run.
